What comes to mind when you think of Cagayan de Oro City aka CDO? White water rafting? Pineapples? Miss Universe Pia? Secretary Andanar?
A homegrown café has been on the mission of making itself a by-word for the second most popular city in Mindanao: Coffeeholic. This boutique coffee bar is a unique concept that is so easy to spot on when you’re at the ground floor of SM Uptown CDO. Be it the white brick wall, European drop lights, narra wood accent, oakwood tables and chairs, leather sofas, Middle Eastern coffee paraphernalia, or infectious smile of its crew, it’s hard to miss this “home of the coffee fanatics”.
The café opened on the 1st of October 2016 and its ribbon cut by no less than CDO Mayor Oscar Moreno, a self-confessed Coffeeholic himself. If you’re a Kagay-anon (a word CDO locals call themselves), you wouldn’t wonder why Coffeeholic is a hit. By far, the café is the first and only shop to offer authentic coffee and tea drinks from the UAE (Arabic Coffee or Qawaah), Ireland (Irish coffee), Armenia (Soorj), Vietnam (Ca Phe Sua Da), Turkey (Turkish coffee), Saudi Arabia (Arabic tea), India (Masala Chai), Pakistan (Karak Tea), etc. The café is also proud of its local brew as it uses coffee beans from its neighboring province Bukidnon and civet coffee from Benguet.
One of the owners, Ceejay, answered these questions for coffee lovers to know more about this shop.
For classic coffee, it’s our cappuccino. Specialty drinks: Vietnamese coffee and Karak tea. Cakes: Honey cake.
Who are the “Coffeeholic”?
Most of our VIP members live just around the neighbourhood in the uptown area of CDO. Then at the weekends, we have shoppers from Marawi and Iligan City and you will see young urban professionals on weekdays. Senior Citizens love their brewed coffee and they always hang out with their family and friends. We also have foreign tourists and expats coming to the shop.
The founders are coffeeholic themselves. I drink 4-5 cups of proper coffee, that’s how I can focus and make my hectic day productive and efficient. I am a workaholic and a coffeeholic. We want to infect fellow Cagay-anons, hence the shop’s existence.
Why open at the mall?
Consider us the haven for families and friends who need to relax before and after going shopping. Husbands also wait for their wives at Coffeeholic. BPO employees come to us for caffeine fix. Millenials and teens come for frappes and Insta-worthy photos.
Any other branch?
Our second branch is in downtown CDO, just across from the City Hall on Capistrano St.
What is Coffeeholic proud of?
We treat coffee matters seriously, we offer authentic coffees from around the world, and our customer service is second to none. Our regulars also love the interiors, the ambience and the vibe.
What is the Coffeeholic VIP Club?
Our VIP card holders enjoy free coffee from Monday to Thursday mornings and 10% off on all drinks. They’re also invited for the coffee tasting events that we hold every month.
CDO is home to thousands of our Muslim brothers and sisters. We want to make sure we serve food and drinks with the utmost food preparation and hygiene practices, which are in accordance to Islam. We do serve two non-halal drinks (Irish and Kahlua) and label them accordingly.
